Gold purity is measured in two systems called Carat and Fineness, which denotes the purity of the metal in parts per thousand. In most cases, the purity of a gold item should be hallmarked or indicated in some other way. For example, a 100g gold bar contains a gold fineness of 999.9, which means the bar is 99.99% pure gold. An item that is 9ct contains 37.5% pure gold and the rest alloy (375 parts per thousand), the recognised hallmark would be ‘375’.

We have an XRF Analyzer. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is a non-destructive analytical method used to determine elemental concentrations in various materials.

We buy all precious metals, including Gold, Silver, Platinum, and Palladium. If you need more information please call us on 0151 666 1431.

Most bullion in the United Kingdom is subject to Value Added Tax (VAT), which since 2011 has been at a set rate of 20%. The exception to the rule is gold bullion, which is VAT free – both in the UK and the wider European Union. This means all of our gold bars and gold coins do not have any additional VAT charge on them.

However, Silver bullion should be viewed like any other product, where you’d expect to pay VAT. You wouldn’t necessarily think about or recognise the VAT, as it would be included in the sales price, but it would still be there. Most of the time we offer pre-owned silver under the VAT-margin scheme, so it’s also worth asking if we have any available.

Capital Gains Tax or CGT is a tax on the gains or profit you make when you sell, give away, or otherwise dispose of something. It applies to assets that you own, such as bullion, shares or property.

There is an annual tax-free allowance of £12,300 (2022/23) and some additional reliefs that may reduce your Capital Gains Tax bill. Most bullion investors will never have to pay this tax due to the size and value of their investment, but it is important that investors know where they stand.

Capital Gains Tax is only payable if an investor makes over £12,300 of profit in one financial year. Be mindful that the £12,300 limit is not the total value of selling your bullion, but the profit made from your original outlay.

Are there any CGT-free gold and silver bullion products? The simple answer is yes. Capital Gains Tax is exempt on all British legal currency. I.e, Gold Sovereigns, Gold Britannia coins, and Silver Britannia coins.
